Defending Monochrome GT4 Australia Silver Cup champion Tom Hayman is taking a trip to Spain on August 5 - 6 after receiving an opportunity from McLaren Customer Racing to test its GT3 and GT4 offerings.
After securing the Silver Cup title last year, Hayman revealed his desire to race internationally to Method Motorsport team co-owner Chaz Mostert, who aided in bringing the opportunity to reality.
“It’s something that I spoke to Chaz about at the start of the year after he asked where I wanted to go with my racing,” said Hayman.
“One of the options was to do GT racing in Europe. It obviously helped to win Silver Cup last year to be able to put name in front of McLaren and push for a test.
“It’s a couple days at Navarro driving a McLaren Artura GT4 and 720S GT3 in an evaluation test. I certainly won’t be the only one there, I’m expecting a few drivers will be assessed during the test.”
The 2025 season saw a change of co-driver from Marcos Flack to Max Geoghegan, and Hayman remains in contention to defend the Silver Cup title, sitting second on the standings with just two rounds remaining.
For Hayman, the test is a direct result and a performance reward of the success he’s achieved in Monochrome GT4 Australia thus far.
“It’s nice to get the nod from McLaren and receive this opportunity thanks to the Silver Cup win and from the successes we’ve had in Australia,” said Hayman.
“I’m really looking forward to driving a GT3 for the first time, and it will be an eye opener as I’ll be thrown in the deep end.”
“It’s awesome for all GT racing in Australia to see that manufacturers are looking to source driving talent from here. It’s pretty cool to be among the very few drivers to get the opportunity from a manufacturer to test with them and it demonstrates Australian GT racing is growing.”
The test marks Hayman’s first experience of a GT3 and highlights Monochrome GT4 Australia as a clear pathway into higher levels of GT racing globally.
“Driving the GT4 and GT3 across both days will be an awesome opportunity to experience the differences, but also how similar the two models are and how much adaptation between the two I’ll have to make,” Hayman explained.
“I also want to demonstrate racing GTs in Europe is accessible to Australians, which gives a huge nod to Monochrome GT4 Australia as a development pathway.
Hayman has the perfect mentor in Mostert, who for a time was part of the factory BMW roster, culminating in class success at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2020.
“It’s great to have someone like Chaz in your ear coaching you through things,” Hayman said.
“He’s got that experience and I’ve been leaning on him pretty hard to understand what I’m in for and to get some good advice before the test.”
Hayman joins fellow Monochrome GT4 Australia drivers Cody Burcher (BMW) and Rylan Gray (Ford) to receive opportunities from manufacturers.
Shell V-Power Motorsport Park hosts the penultimate round of Monochrome GT4 Australia as a part of GT Festival The Bend on September 5-7.
