Mark Cotterell makes Am Cup switch for 2025 opener

Following Pro-Am Cup podium success partnering with Jarrod Hughes last year, Cotterell will make a comeback in his Ginetta G55 GT4 and will be partnered by Production Sports rival Chris Whittaker for the round.

Cotterell completed a part-season last year alongside Hughes, which included two podium results at Phillip Island and a front-row start at Queensland Raceway.

With Hughes moving across to Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Mercedes-AMG program in 2025, Cotterell has recruited friend Whittaker to take on an expected strong Am Cup field at Phillip Island.

Cotterell enters Phillip Island having worked extensively with Hughes on driving technique up at Norwell, while Whittaker will be making his Monochrome GT4 Australia debut at Phillip Island. It won't be the first time he has driven the Cotterell Ginetta though as Whittaker has had multiple stints in the past, while also being a regular fast charger in the Queensland Production Sports Championship in a Datsun 240z.

Currently, Cotterell and Whittaker are committed to contesting just the season opener, but remain open to completing the season.

The Monochrome GT4 Australia season begins at Phillip Island as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries on April 4-6.

Tickets for the season opener can be purchased via speedseries.com.au.

“Last time down there I hadn’t driven the track, there was a fair bit of wet weather,” Cotterell reflected.

“I didn’t drive that well. I didn’t do a bad job, Jarrod and I came home with a couple of second place trophies.

“Chris mostly punts around his Datsun 240z in Prod Sports and historic events. “I said ‘I’m going to do Phillip Island, do you want to do it?’ He said, ‘I’d be mad not to do it’, so here we are. Chris and I are just going down there to have some fun, but let’s see what happens.

“I’m determined to up my driving a bit. Jarrod and I worked on a few things last year at Norwell, but I was back up there in January improving on my braking on entry into a corner. Being an older driver, it’s all about breaking through the barrier of knowing the car can do this and the control of your right foot is indicative of what responsibilities you’ve got that weekend.

“It’s a great track, so it’s worth giving it a go then we’ll see for the rest of the rounds.”
