Porsche unveil new 911 GT4 R customer race car.

Porsche will begin a new era of GT4 racing in 2027 with the unveiling of its brand new 911 GT4 R customer race car.

Set to be injected into GT4 competitions around the world alongside the current Cayman model, the move signals the iconic manufacturer's commitment to the growing category and builds on its already successful GT4 program.

Since entering the global GT4 market in 2016, Porsche has built more than 1,500 Cayman-based GT4 cars, a number of which have raced and enjoyed silverware in Monochrome GT4 Australia over the past three years - including Shane Smollen and Lachlan Mineeff’s Silver-Am (then Pro-Am) title in 2024.

There is no shortage of Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS CS entries in Monochrome GT4 Australia, with four entries having run the car at Queensland, including Race 2 Silver-Am Cup winners Caleb Paterson and Scott Green and Am Cup Race 1 winners Nathan Callaghan and Chris Lillis.

While drivers will still be able to pilot the current Cayman model alongside the new 911 GT4 R, the car is expected to appeal to ambitious customer teams seeking a higher-performance GT4 option.

Inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car, the 911 GT4 R boasts one of the most significant technical changes in Porsche's GT4 program since the category's inception, with a number of features to appeal to aspiring drivers.

Armed with a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six boxer engine, a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle-shift operation and updated motorsport electronics compared to the Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the 911 GT4 R could become an instant contender for the series.

“With the new racing car based on the Porsche 911 GT3, we are taking our successful GT4 programme to a new level. The combination of iconic 911 DNA and the tried-and-tested GT4 concept creates a unique offering in the market,” Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport said:

“Our decision to bring the 911 platform into the GT4 category underlines the growing importance of this class in international motorsport. GT4 has evolved from an entry-level segment into a highly competitive, globally relevant racing platform.”

More information on the Porsche 911 GT4 R customer race car will be released in the coming months.
